This is a before March of 2004. This is a typical backyard in Iowa especially if your three kids play as much as theirs do in the backyard. Notice the extreme mud caused from making an Ice Hockey rink in the middle of the backyard. Thats the price they were willing to pay for having a large area for ice skating.
I suggested they consider turning that mud hole they dealt with every Spring into a "Backyard SportsCenter" to go with the new pool that was already contracted. This would eliminate the mud and create a safer as well as a cleaner environment that would look great and be very low maintenance. An extreme backyard makeover! They thought about it and figured it was time for a change...
Soon we had the back-yard cleared of old railroad tie walls, brush, unwanted trees, regraded the lawn, installed drainage from the downspouts, and were ready for the new main features.
A four inch rock base was laid and compacted, we used reinforced wire mesh and 4" x 4000 psi concrete for the base pad with 1/2 % slope. (They wanted the slope reduced as much as possible so it would not take as much water on the downhill end to fill a liner for the Winter Ice Rink)

With the swimming pool, concrete and most landscape features in place. Now only the electrical wiring, finishing the retaining walls, Laying paving stones for the main patio, the court surface and lawn installation were all that were left.

Now with the project complete the Jones family and guests will enjoy a safer, low maintenance and an incredible backyard. Here the family and friends can swim and play for hours every day. Long forgotten are the hassles of transporting the kids back and forth from the house to the park. Or the waiting in lines at the pool to get in and for the diving board. How about when the pool or park closes just when you were starting to have a great time? Notice the light pole? You can now enjoy your Backyard Sports Center® at night too. |
